Computer Recycling in New York State – NAID AAA

New York State does not have particularly stringent computer recycling regulations.  The regulations require that computer equipment must be recycled by a qualified recycler. Back Thru The Future is a Federal EPA registered and NJ DEP licensed “Universal Waste Destination Facility” for the recycling of consumer electronics. We are also NAID AAA Certified, which means that Back Thru The Future has the highest qualifications in the industry for data destruction and computer recycling in New York State.

Regulations

New York State, along with all other 49 states, adopted the US EPA “Universal Waste” handling regulations. Because of this, we are authorized by the Federal EPA to issue an environmental compliance document as a legally valid environmental compliance certificate. This certificate is recognized by the State of NY, as well as all other states .  Note: Interstate commerce regulations state, “It is not the regulations of the state the disposal originally occurred in but the state regulations where the final disposal occurs that you must comply with”. Therefore, we also protect you in the event of disposal occurring outside of New York State.

Recycling in New York City

Unique computer recycling capabilities in New York

Our initial hard drive shredding equipment was a high capacity four shaft metal shredding machine with input and output conveyors. We recognized that as our volumes grew, the shredded hard drive material could potentially possess a source of recoverable value. As with all recyclable material, the purity of the recycled material adds substantial recovery value. Hard drives are made up of four different recyclable materials, aluminum, stainless steel, ferrous metal, and circuit boards. Over time we have developed a highly efficient and proprietary materials separation process. This provides us with a significant additional source of revenue and a major pricing competitive advantage over shredders with no electronic recycling capabilities.

Back Thru The Future currently owns three highly customized onsite hard drive shredding vehicles. These high capacity vehicles can tackle the largest onsite shred projects quickly and provide flexibility for time sensitive projects. Our high capacity trucks and in house shredding capabilities means that we have the highest hard drive shredding capacity in the industry.

Legal Compliance

Our experience in the legal industry provides us with the specialized insight to the importance of regularly scheduled data destruction events. Because we understand the unique needs of the legal industry, we have many large law firms and litigation services firms as clients. Any type of data destruction, including hard drive shredding, can be impacted by litigation and electronic data discovery requirements. From a legal records management viewpoint, accumulating business records that can legally be destroyed is a very bad and potentially very expensive practice.

Safe Harbor Exemption

Obsolete hard drives contain business records. From a legal records management stand point, they should be destroyed as soon as possible. In a litigation, courts may implement a “litigation hold” on all relevant data destruction activity. We have a number of large clients with thousands of hard drives in storage because of the litigation hold requirements. Failure to implement a litigation hold can result in court sanctions and even jail. However, the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure (FRCP) governing electronic data discovery requirements specifically identify a “safe harbor” data destruction procedure that protects you from court sanctions. This procedure states that if your data destruction activity is part of an automated records retention system, you are granted a “safe harbor” exemption. Annual prescheduled hard drive data destruction services qualify for this exemption. With this exemption in mind, Back Thru The Future® introduced our annual Safe Harbor Express® (SHE) secure data destruction agreement. This is a unique turnkey service providing all regulatory handling procedures and documentation.  We also offer a discounted price for the annual agreement versus project based pricing. Back Thru The Future currently has over 200 clients utilizing this service.

Our electronic recycling credentials and hard drive shredding capabilities are unmatched by any other company in the secure data destruction industry. We believe that secure data destruction services represent an important business partnership and we are a partner that you can trust.

Experienced

Back Thru the Future has been providing environmentally compliant computer recycling services in New York for over 30 years. In 2005 we became the first computer recycler in the country to offer stand alone hard drive shredding services. With over 1000 customers we have the experience and expertise to address any type of shredding project.

Certified

We are a US EPA registered and NJ State DEP licensed Universal Waste (Hazardous Waste) electronics recycling facility, NAID AAA and PCI DSS certified secure processing facility, ISO 9001 (quality), 14001 (EHS), 45001 (OSHA) certified- R2 certified. Back Thru The Future is also a Licensed NYS mobile shredder.

We are dedicated to providing our New York Computer Recycling customers with the highest level of regulatory compliance.

Capable

Back Thru The Future employs 4 mobile hard drive shredding vehicles as well as both a high capacity plant based shredder and disintegrator.  Our shredders are capable of 3/8″ shredding size which is required for NIST compliant SSD destruction. Several are rated at over 2000 hard drives shred per hour.  We have the capability to address any type and size shredding project.

WE SHRED SOLID STATE DRIVES (SSD)!

Onsite shredding is the most effective method for sanitizing SSD and solid state cards. Because of the very small size of solid
state circuitry, NIST destruction guidelines require a maximum shred size of 1/2 inches. Back Thru The Future is one of only a
very limited number of onsite hard drive shredding services that can meet this shred size standard. Today, most mobile
computing devices utilize solid state storage. Server hard drives are rapidly incorporating solid state data storage components.
The sanitization of solid state storage devices is becoming a significant data security challenge. Adopting onsite SSD shredding
as your universal data destruction process eliminates the technical challenges of sanitizing solid state media and provides a one-stop solution to all of your data destruction needs.

WE MAKE HARD DRIVES AN ENVIRONMENTALLY SUSTAINABLE PRODUCT

As a Federal and State licensed electronic recycling facility, we provide a Certificate of Destruction that is also a regulatory required environmental compliance document. Our proprietary materials sorting process allows us to recapture nearly 100% of the materials used in the manufacturing of a hard drive. This makes a hard drive as close as possible to an environmentally sustainable product.

100% of our client quality control surveys rate both our pre-project and
