“NJ First.” A Legacy of Leadership in Electronic Recycling

The Oldest Continuously Operating Computer Recycler in New Jersey

Founded in 1990 in Morristown, Back Thru The Future Computer Recycling began as a parts recovery operation, salvaging reusable components from IBM and Compaq PCs and supplying them overnight to third-party maintenance providers for urgent repair needs.

More than three decades later, we remain New Jersey’s oldest continuously operating computer recycling business—and one of the earliest in the United States.

Regulatory Leadership From the Start

Among the First Five NJDEP-Licensed Electronic Recyclers

In 2000, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection selected Back Thru The Future to participate in its new regulatory framework governing electronic waste, recognizing computers as a form of hazardous material requiring controlled end-of-life management.

We became:

  • A NJDEP Class D licensed recycling facility
  • A Federal EPA Universal Waste Electronic Destination Facility
  • Today, we remain one of only seven Class D electronic recycling facilities in New Jersey—authorized to issue fully compliant recycling certificates in NJ and all other 49 states. (With over 100 NJ businesses advertising “computer recycling services, why so few licenses?)

Pioneering Secure Data Destruction

The FIRST U.S. E-Recycling Company to Offer Stand-Alone Hard Drive Shredding

In 2005, we deployed a dedicated, high-capacity shredding system built exclusively for hard drive and data media destruction. Prior to this innovation, data sanitization relied mainly on software overwrites, drilling, or crushing. Our shredding capability set a new standard for complete, efficient, and verifiable data destruction.

First Electronic Recycler in the U.S. to Achieve NAID AAA Certification

In 2006, Back Thru The Future became the first electronic recycling company in the nation to earn NAID AAA Certification, adopting the highest security standards established by the data destruction industry’s leading authority.

Breaking Ground in On-Site Hard Drive Shredding

First NJDEP-Approved Class D Facility Authorized for On-Site Shredding

Until 2012, New Jersey prohibited all on-site hard drive shredding. Back Thru The Future successfully petitioned the NJDEP for a regulatory amendment, becoming the only licensed electronic recycling facility in the state authorized to perform mobile shredding operations.

Even after statewide regulations were updated in 2015 to permit on-site shredding, only Class D licensed facilities like ours can issue NJ-compliant environmental recycling certificates, since shredded material must still be processed through a licensed destination facility.
