Environmental Regulations

There are over 1000 computer recycling companies in the United States - all of which will claim to be environmentally compliant.

What Does Environmental Compliance Mean? Environmental regulations governing computer disposal are exclusively state mandated; there are no current federal regulations for computer disposal. A computer recycling company must be registered with the environmental protection department of its resident state. Federal EPA "Acknowledgement of Notification of Hazardous Waste Activity" is not sufficient.

Universal Waste is a Federal EPA classification for a particular type of hazardous waste. States may add items to their own universal waste listings. Universal Waste regulations are standardized and legally recognized by all 50 States.

Federal interstate commerce laws governing solid waste disposal require that environmental regulations of the state where waste will be disposed, not the state from which it originated, be followed.  Back Thru The Future is located in New Jersey and follows the NJ DEP regulations.

The NJ DEP has identified non-reusable consumer electronics (any device containing an electronic circuit board) as "Universal Waste" Click here for more info.
